Dear Parents,
On Monday, April 8th, 2024, the US will experience a total eclipse of the sun. The next total
eclipse in North America won’t occur until 2044. Although Delhi isn’t in the path of totality, a
significant portion of the sun will be blocked by the moon, as shown by the chart below.
In order to take advantage of this rare natural phenomenon and excellent learning opportunity,
DCS has ordered viewing glasses for the students. These glasses do meet the ISO 12312-2
standards, and were ordered from a vendor approved by the American Astronomical Society.
It is dangerous to stare at the sun without eye protection, even during a partial eclipse. Although we’ve done our best to ensure that the glasses we’ve purchased offer legitimate eye protection,
some parents may still not wish that their children view the eclipse directly. Therefore, glasses
will only be issued to students that have returned this signed parental consent. Otherwise,
students can still view the eclipse indirectly using the pinhole card projector method. The
eclipse will be viewable for a few hours on Monday, so please warn your children not to look
directly at the eclipse without proper eye protection.
